Meet the Artist

Harvey Walls discovered he was an artist in kindergarten. With his love for drawing, he added to his skills by graduating with a B.A. in graphic design at Kutzown University of Pennsylvania. He currently resides in the northeastern United States.

Recognized as a thinker and a perfectionist, he primes and moils a clean, atmospheric style with blooming environments and moods of color.

His character design process portrays a purposeful pinch of comic flair with a kinship of realism, producing charming renderings that delight from page to page.

Three Questions

What inspires your work?

I love to look at artist illustrations and I get that same feeling when I've finished a project. I want to invoke that feeling in others and it motivates me to draw again and again.

What’s your favorite project you’ve worked on?

Thus far, it's my first children's book I ever completed, "How Digby Earned His Wolfpack Name" by the wonderful, Rebecca Fraser. The overwhelming joy I felt as the illustrations developed to the final day that proved to me that I could do it!

What kind of projects are you hoping to create next?

I will continue to create the most wonderful children’s books that I can make. Eventually my goal is to win the Caldecott medal someday.

Meet the Artist

I always referred to myself as a Pennsylvania farm girl... I grew up on a 100-acre sheep farm in rural Pennsylvania. I’ve always loved animals and feel that we overlook an incredible source of creature knowledge and spiritual companionship by seeing non-human life as merely planetary decoration.

As a result, I like to tell the stories of animals from their perspective, with the human audience watching from a distance. I especially love the projects where I create an actual animal language that has to be learned, and its meaning interpreted as you go along.

I am currently finalizing Mother Star Bear Moon, about a bear cub who loses her mother in a blizzard and has to learn how to face life without her. It is dedicated to my mother, who was my best friend for over 50 years.

Why I Chose This Artist

I first discovered Holly’s expressive cat illustrations that she shares on Substack. She can really capture their personalities, quirks, and subtle expressions! As a mother of two young girls and a fellow children’s book author, I really appreciate how her artistic style works to develop empathy for animals and an appreciation for the natural world.

What inspires your work?

My love of animals and the incredible beauty of this planet that is all around us.

What’s your favorite project you’ve worked on?

Wander was the first project with a glyph language and that was so fun that I have another glyph project in the works.

What kind of projects are you hoping to create next?

The iPad version of Wander includes a little animation in the form of tappable glyphs with short definitions. I have always wanted to do animated children's books so that is always on my back burner as the technology improves.
